What is it about Playboys?

Author Focus: Synithia Williams
Welcome to Synithia Williams who is here today to pose a question about one of the most popular character types in romance books. Leave a comment - talk to us - because we all want to know the answers to our questions...

What is it about a playboy that’s so alluring? We may hate the double standard that a man who sleeps around isn’t called a slut, but in the end there are thousands of romance novels, chick flicks and real life examples of women falling in love with an anti-commitment man.

Maybe it’s the idea that a rake can reform. That there is one woman out there who will make this playboy fall in love and give up his wild ways. While this is great in romance, often times it’s not the case in real life. In real life, the billionaire doesn’t always marry his secretary. The unexpected pregnancy from an affair doesn’t always result in a happy marriage. And playboys who take a woman’s virginity don’t always discover something special that makes him fall in love.

Real life can suck. That’s why I read and write romance. Sure the situations are part fantasy, but what the hell is wrong with fantasy? What’s wrong with escaping the realities of 21st century dating and spending a few hours with men who are rough on the outside, but chivalrous on the inside? Not a damn thing.

So, I’ll continue to write about elusive playboys who fall in love unexpectedly. Because I’m a pessimistic romantic, I make it hard for them to fall. I can’t be all flowers and sunshine. But, in the end there will be a happy ending.

QUESTION: Why do you think playboys are so popular in romances?

After Tasha Smith is dumped yet again because of her virginity, decides it’s time to stop saving herself for marriage and start dating like women in the twenty-first century. She sets out to find a man rumored to be good enough in bed to relieve her of the nuisance, but discreet enough to keep her request a secret. Jared Patterson seems like the perfect candidate. Yet after one searing kiss, she wonders if she’ll escape the night unscathed.

Jared’s job as a successful fitness instructor and entrepreneur has helped him keep a string of meaningless relationships from the east to the west coast. After learning the hard way that women can’t be trusted, he has no qualms going from one sex only relationship to the next. Although Tasha is one of the few types of women he avoids—a good girl—the man in him can’t turn down her tempting offer.

What starts out as a onetime thing quickly turns into an affair neither want to stop. But when an unexpected situation drastically alters their relationship, it leaves them both asking if it was Worth the Wait.

  2. Ilove to read about playboys or rakes if it a historical. i also write about them. I think for me it is the idea that finding just the right woman is all it takes to bring these men to theis knees. i know that it doesn't always happen in realife, but I am okay with that.
