Sophia's gaze wandered to the Yankee's face. "Sweet Mother of Jesus, Gavin!"
Drawn to the wound in his chest, blood soaked his dark blue shirt and fanned out to the waistband of his trousers.
Cloudy, pain-filled eyes opened and a pained smile bracketed his mouth. "Walked for miles."
Memories from their childhood surfaced. "Oh, dear God, I didn't know, thought you were one of them."
He struggled to lift his head. "Discharged, head wound, I came to tell you . . . ."
Scattering the pewter buttons, she tore his shirt open. Dear God, so much blood.
"Thought of nothing but you while I was gone; nothing but you since the day I pulled you from the river. Jesse ... Jesse is―" His head fell to the side and his eyes fluttered shut.
