#Thursday13 Crime Fighters

Welcome my guest today... author Shannyn Schroeder. Shannyn is a former English teacher, who now works as a part-time editor while raising her three kids. Even though she wrote when she was younger, she’d never considered a career as an author. Writing fell by the wayside as she focused on creating lesson plans and new and fabulous ways to torment her teen students. After the birth of baby number two, Shannyn resigned from teaching and fell in love with reading romance novels. The writing bug bit her again, and she hasn’t looked back.

We have the privilege of having her visit on her book's release day. (Be sure to congratulate her when you leave a comment!) She gives us her list of  her Favorite Crime Fighters. Do you agree? Disagree? Or have one to add? Let's chat - Leave a comment!

Anyone who knows me or reads my blog knows that I watch far too much TV and that I have an affinity for cop shows. However, many of the men I really love aren’t really cops, but they do seek justice. They stand up for the weak and vulnerable in order to do what’s right.

These are not in any particular order because, really, how could I choose a favorite? Plus I think it goes without saying that the actors who play these characters are downright yummy, so I won’t repeat that 13 times. But they are So. Very. Yummy.

1. Raylan Givens (Justified) – Raylan is a U.S. Marshall who has a habit of shooting bad guys. They are always bad and the shootings are always justified. But Raylan is more than a man in a white hat; he has a troubled past, an ex that wants him to be something he’s not, and a boyhood friend who’s always on the other side of the law. SEE PHOTO to LEFT.

2. Oliver Queen (Arrow)—This show is really new, but Oliver Queen epitomizes what we love in a super hero. He leads 2 lives: one where he is the spoiled, shallow, rich kid; the other where he attempts to right his father’s wrongs and fix the city where he lives. He works outside the law, and the police see him as a vigilante (which he is), but he can accomplish what the police can’t. SEE PHOTO to RIGHT.

3. Derek Morgan (Criminal Minds) – Morgan is one of the members of the BAU (behavioral analysis unit) of the FBI. He hunts serial killers. The show itself focuses mainly on the case each week, but every now and then, we get snippets of the personal lives of the agents. Morgan is a complex character. He grew up in Chicago (my hometown!), raised by women. He was molested by a priest and never really came to terms with that until he had a case back home. He always fights for the victims and tries to save as many as he can.

4. Sherlock Holmes (Elementary or Sherlock) – regardless of which version you prefer to watch, both examples of Holmes are lovable. You gotta love a man with a brilliant mind who has some weird quirks.

5. Seely Booth (Bones) – Ahhh, Booth. He’s an FBI agent who works with Temperance Brennan, AKA Bones. They solve murders together. Booth has a troubled past: alcoholic abusive father, gambling addiction, but he used his time in the Army to become a great FBI agent. He goes with his gut and he understands people. He’s fiercely loyal and really believes in the law and the system.

6. Richard Castle (Castle) – Castle is a mystery writer who tags along with cops and helps them solve crimes. He is the comic relief for Detective Kate Beckett. They have great chemistry (in the interrogation room as well as the bedroom) and they play off each other to make a great team.

7. Danny Reagan (Blue Bloods) – Danny Reagan comes from a long line of cops. His whole family is law enforcement (even his sister is a DA). Danny straddles the line of legality and sometimes crosses over if he thinks he needs to. He’s a family man who really likes having a family; they’re not just there as props.

8. Augie Anderson (Covert Affairs) – Augie is CIA. He’s also blind. He lost is sight in a roadside bomb while serving in the military. He’s rarely in the field, but he manages to be independent and take charge regardless of where he is. Also, he’s a genius.

9. Eliot Spencer (Leverage) – Eliot is part of a team of bad guys that go after other bad guys. Eliot has been an enforcer. He beats people. He doesn’t use weapons. He has a soft spot for kids and women in distress.

10. Dexter Morgan (Dexter) – Some people might take issue with Dexter appearing on this list because he is a serial killer after all. But he lives by a code. He only goes after bad guys that slip through the cracks and get away with doing horrible things. He does what the police haven’t been able to do.

11. Dyson (Lost Girl) – Dyson is a werewolf whose job in the human world is that of a cop. He also takes care of all fae cases that touch the human world. The thing I love most about Dyson isn’t just that he’s a good guy, but that he’s loyal and loves with everything he has.

12. Kevin Corcoran (Copper) – This is also a new show this year. Copper takes place in 1865 in New York. Corky is an Irish detective on the NYPD. It’s an interesting time and he’s an intriguing character. He treats black men as equals, and I think part of that comes from the discrimination he feels as an Irish immigrant. He spent the entire season (besides solving cases) searching for his missing wife and his daughter’s murderer. He’s a little obsessed and the season didn’t end well for him. SEE PHOTO.

13. Patrick Jayne (The Mentalist) – Jayne is a great character because he’s unorthodox. He’s a former fake psychic who uses his powers of observation to help catch criminals. He does this as part of his own journey to find the serial killer Red John who killed Jayne’s wife and daughter. The day-to-cases are okay, but it’s watching Jayne try to hunt Red John that keeps me coming back.

  1. Hi Paloma,

Thanks so much for letting me take over your blog today. I'd love to hear who your readers thing I've left off my list. I did have to keep it to 13, so I'm sure I've forgotten someone's favorite.

  2. Glad you were here. Shannyn. I don't watch a lot of tv but I do record Covert Affairs for those times when I have a chance to watch something. I adore Augie. I am holding out for he and Annie to get together. Nothing sexier than a man with a brain and a body!

Good luck on your new release. The blurb sounds great. :)
